Team / Group Generator is a free online tool that splits a list of names into fair, random teams or groups. Choose how many teams you want, or how many people per team, and the tool automatically distributes the remaining participants as evenly as possible. It's a practical solution for teachers forming project groups, managers building small teams, event organizers assigning sports teams, or friends splitting into teams for game night. Everything runs in your browser; your name list is stored only on your device in localStorage.

How to Use

  1. Type your participants' names into the text box, one name per line.
  2. Choose either the 'Team count' or 'Team size' mode.
  3. Enter how many teams you want, or how many people per team.
  4. Click 'Create Teams'; participants are distributed randomly and evenly.
  5. Not happy with the result? Click 'Shuffle Again' to reroll with the same settings.

Use Cases

  • Randomly grouping students for a school project or classroom activity
  • Forming small teams or working groups at work
  • Assigning teams for sports events or pickup games
  • Building random teams for game nights or party activities

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if the participant count doesn't divide evenly into teams?

The tool distributes the remaining people across teams in turn, so at most some teams end up with one extra person — no team ends up more than one person larger than another.

Should I set a team count or a team size?

Either works: use 'Team count' if you know how many teams you want, or 'Team size' if you know how many people should be on each team.

Can I reshuffle if I don't like the result?

Yes, click 'Shuffle Again' to generate a new random distribution using the same participant list and settings.

Is my participant list saved anywhere?

No. The list is stored only in your own browser (localStorage) and is never sent to a server.
